Diploma Changes
The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is considering significant changes to Indiana’s high school diploma requirements that could impact your child. We have compiled information and links for you to review and provide feedback to the IDOE before this feedback window closes. (View a flyer with an overview.)
WHEN WOULD THE CHANGES HAPPEN?
The proposed changes will go into effect for this current 7th grade class graduating 2029.
WHAT WOULD CHANGE?
-
Number of diploma options reduced to two (Indiana GPS Diploma, Indiana GPS Plus Diploma)
-
Addition of “points” to be completed during Grades 11 and 12 (see below)
WHY CHANGE THE DIPLOMA?
The IDOE is working to make the proposed changes to align the current Graduation Pathways with Indiana’s diploma with the Indiana Graduates Prepared to Succeed (GPS) characteristics while maintaining rigor. The five characteristics have been identified as essential to a student’s lifelong success:
- Academic Mastery
- Career & Postsecondary Readiness: Credentials & Experiences
- Communication & Collaboration
- Work Ethic
- Civic, Financial, & Digital Literacy
INDIANA GPS DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS
(A more flexible, personalized version of the current Core 40 diploma)
-
Foundational courses and competencies for all students
-
A minimum of 20 additional courses and competencies (“points”) completed during 11th and 12th grades.
-
Points are a way to measure academic mastery and skill development, whether that learning occurs through credit attainment or competency-based education.
-
At least two of these points must come from Math and four must come from English.
-
Students should use their individual graduation plan, completed in 8th grade, to determine course sequences.
-
INDIANA GPS DIPLOMA PLUS REQUIREMENTS
(Requires high-quality work-based learning and a credential of value)
-
In addition to the foundational courses plus competencies for all students, those pursuing the Indiana GPS Diploma Plus will complete additional coursework aligned to their chosen credential of value, as well as a high-quality work-based learning experience.
Please know that the leadership team at CGHS and CGCSC is staying updated, designing our local approach and plan, and will be updating you throughout the process.
